An Exciting First Term

Year 3

In Year 3, we have all really enjoyed making new friends this term. We have been assigned buddies in Year 6, who we all love playing with on the playground.

We have been learning all about The Stone Age and The Iron Age. Our class book this term is called ‘The Pebble in my Pocket’ by Meredith Hooper and it’s about our world and our earth. We have been writing descriptions about the pebble. Here is an extract from Lottie’s work in 3D:

The river drops the pebble onto a beach and joins lots of other pebbles. The waves on the sea wash them backwards and forwards, grinding them up and grinding them down. The pebbles scrape against each other and make scratch marks on them. The pebbles clank together. He said, “I want to go home!” as loud as he could, but he couldn’t because he was a pebble. Suddenly, the pebble got very sleepy, so he went to sleep. He had a dream about meeting his friends at the bank of the sea and they took him back to his home. When he was sleeping, he drifted further and further out to sea. When he woke up, he could only see the depths of the sea and all of the other pebbles. Surprisingly, they all looked the same, except for himself…

Year 4

Breaking News! The class of 4J, 4R and 4C flew to Africa on the 17th September 2016! It was a very rough journey for Year 4 to get to the lovely destination of Africa. On the way to Africa, the lovely cabin crew (our teachers) served us with tasty biscuits and fresh water. When we finally arrived in Africa, we went to three scrumptious restaurants that had the most amazing food in the whole world. Right before we were going to go home, our tour guide took us to a school all about Africa and about Benin. After we went to the super restaurants, we went back to the airport and went on the plane to get ready for take-off. It took about three or four hours to get to our destination, but, when we did arrive back, we went back to our lovely houses in Knaphill.

We have been doing lots of other exciting activities in Year 4. Recently, in Year 4, we have been writing a setting and character description about the rainforest. We watched the BBC advertisement for the 2016 Rio Olympics and we saw some of the animals that live in the rainforest: the Black Panther, tiger, but, most importantly, the fierce lions and the snakes.

In Science, we have been finding out about the skeleton. We drew around some on our bodies and then labelled all of the bones. The scientific word for the shoulder bone (collarbone) is clavicle. As well as that, we made healthy eating plates to help our skeleton have a balanced diet. With our teachers, we labelled parts of our teeth. The big teeth at the back of your mouth are called the molars they are used to crush your food and canines are to rip food.

Year 5

In Year 5, we made a solar system out of fruit and loo roll - it was very enjoyable, but it was extremely messy and the loo roll kept on flying away! Unfortunately, it was on a windy day, so it was a bit difficult.

In Computing, which is one of my favourite subjects, we have been learning about SCRATCH and coding algorithms. We have been focussing on moving our sprite around the stage and programming a maze. Although it is a bit tricky, it is really fun.

In Art, linking to our topic Space, we have been sketching a rocket ship – you should come and see our amazing drawings!

In Literacy, we have been learning about commas and where we should be using them in our writing. Sometimes commas can change the meaning of a sentence!

Year 6

Excitement has started to spread across Year Six, as the Political Parties have started to grow and evolve from ideas to reality. From hamsters to wet play games, these groups are just some of the reasons that the parents will be coming into school for. Monday kicked off the parties to send them into orbit. When parents come down, next week, they will leave their marks and decide who will win. Until then, we will just have to wait and see if those ideas can really shock the parents like we think they will. Who do you think will win?

Learning has been in full swing this term. In Literacy, we have enjoyed starting to read our class book, ‘The London Eye Mystery’. We wrote brilliant and vivid descriptions about the strange man in the queue. Here is a snippet of Zara’s fantastic character description from 6F.

Searching through the crowd of the unknown tourists, a peculiar figure loomed in the distance; a blurry piece of tattered paper was held in one hand, a burned cigarette was in the other. An immense waft of smoke puffed out of his mouth, as he gently blew it out like a birthday candle – the smoke floated wildly in the misty air. As he fixed his icy, cold stare into the distance, the inquisitive man anxiously took a step forwards. Then another. Each step made him clearer. His identity was no longer hidden. Intimidatingly, his beady, blue eyes stared at everyone in his way, truly, it was a frightening sight. On top of his twitching head, was a handful of brown, bushy hair, which stuck out at every direction possible. A dark, wrinkled jacket was clinging desperately onto his limp shoulders. He took another step. And another.
